Cannabis Use In Pregnancy. Why Risk It?

With the legalization of cannabis you may be wondering what the medical recommendations are for its use in pregnancy.  Just like alcohol in pregnancy it is NOT recommended and NOT considered safe in pregnancy.  The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC)  and America (ACOG) have put forward a strong warning against marajuana use in pregnancy.  There is concern that with the recent legalization and confusion around advertised indications for marajuana that women may not realize the true medical recommendations.

The risk to marajuana use in pregnancy includes:

  1. Low Birth Weight
  2. Preterm Labour
  3. Stillbirth
  4. Negative Impacts on Baby’s Developing Brain.

Dr Blake CEO of the SOGC says “Current research indicates that cannabis has the potential to cause lifelong harm to a developing fetus in terms of memory function, hyperactive behaviour and increased risk of anxiety and depression.  Why risk it?
